Hayes Disc Brakes

Hayes is the industry leader in mountain bike disc brakes. As their sole design agency, I helped expand their product lines to include wheels, suspension and other cycling components. They eventually became Hayes Bicycle Group.

My Role

As the owner of my own agency, I wore many hats. I was the Creative Director, UX Designer, and when it came to the development of the site, I became the Engineering Manager and QA. I also managed the printing, construction of tradeshow booths/ graphics and liaison between my client and publishers.

Running my own design agency required me to wear multiple hats. It was rewarding to be able to lead all creative efforts because it allowed me to oversee all aspects of the product marketing. For the Hayes website, I was the sole UX Designer. I drafted the sitemap, wireframes, and crafted the visual design. I also conducted UX Research for feedback. The result was a huge leap for the Hayes product marketing. We continued this overall design aesthetic to many aspects of the brand including tradeshow graphics and packaging.

The disc brakes packaging consisted of the main corrugated box in grey. The decals that displayed the name and features were printed separately. I came up with a cost-saving solution to manufacture the main boxes in quantity, while printing the model decals on an as-need basis. Future disc brake models were also able to utilize this design.

The Hayes Stroker microsite was an extension of Hayes advertising campaigns. Through direct links, we were able to focus Hayes’ message on the latest product offering. In this example, I created an interactive showcase, that promoted the various features of the disc brake mechanical engineering and it’s benefit to the mountain biker
